Academic Freedom in Schools

The argument on academic freedom has been going on and on and it is the same as those for the freedom of speech because they basically rest on a similar foundation. Academic freedom is a belief that students and faculty members must be given freedom of inquiry because it is essential to the mission of the institution and that scholars must have freedom to communicate or teach facts and ideas without them being a target for job loss, imprisonment, or repression. Academic freedom is a view that if scholars and teachers will promote for the growth of intelligence and knowledge, they must be given the freedom to teach and conduct questions without having the fear of reprisals and sanctions.

Research has revealed that education that starts from early childhood works better when it comes to preventing problems especially when it focuses not on teacher-directed and scripted academic instructions but on learning activities which are child-initiated. Research findings suggest that the aim of early childhood education must not be limited to the academic preparations needed for school, but it should include helping kids in making decisions, solving problems, and socializing and getting along well with other people.

This kind of freedom covers the entire education expanse, from primary school to the advanced levels on university studies. However, research in developmental, educational, and cognitive psychology has revealed that development and learning are both self-regulated and active processes which require one’s freedom to seek some new information, express and formulate one’s own ideas, and to be able to engage in topic discussion. Intellectual freedom is important to intellectual development ever since starting preschool up to college.

Elementary education is not that different to. Probably we cannot run a kindergarten similar to the way one will run a university but one can offer students coming from all ages with a curriculum that is determined by experts and teachers regarding their academic grounds and encourage students to figure things out on their own, say what they want to say, explain reasons, and discuss the ideas that they might have. Teachers and their students need academic freedom at all education levels. The outcomes of contingent reinforcement, together with performance standards whether they are externally imposed or self-determined on the children’s productivity were examined under a naturalistic setting.

In academic freedom, instructors have the responsibility to be responsive and understand the parent’s concern regarding their children and their safety. While kids attend school, teachers embrace the role of being the ones responsible for the children, due to the absence of their parents during those times, academic freedom must be offered by every school to the children. However, it is one thing that many schools really lack.

There are so many benefits that can be brought about by academic freedom but the downside is that the humanitarian philosophy would not be properly applied in so many parts of the world, in less developed countries, to be exact. This is one of the main reasons why university education why university education is not considered as true education – development.
